Configure My Local Area Network (LAN) To Work With The Vertex Box

This is a standard method that works for installing a Vertex CallerID box in a mesh network with VoIP phone service where the VoIP data on the LAN is communicating on an unencrypted UDP protocol.

Things To Note

  • A managed switch is required

  • A managed switch defaults with one VLAN with all ports untagged so it performs as auto switching

  • Disable loop detection if it is enabled. VLAN 2 for the Vertex may cause the switch to crash due to error logging as VLAN 2 is essentially looping the data to itself.

How To

  1. Log in to your managed switch

  2. Configure two VLAN’s

    1. VLAN 1

      1. All default LAN ports used for all data and phone devices

      2. Be sure to remove the two available ports being used in VLAN 2

    2. VLAN 2

      1. Name it Vertex for easy identification purposes

      2. Assign the two available ports as tagged members

      3. Configure the ports to use 100M Half-Duplex

        1. If PPoE is used, disable it on these ports as well

  3. Mirror Port 1 on the switch to one of the available ports used in VLAN 2
    1. Connect this port to the Towards Gateway port on the Vertex Box
    2. Connect the remaining port on VLAN 2 to the To Phones port on the Vertex Box
  4. Connect Port 1 on the switch to the internet supply wire for your Internet Service Providers Gateway
    1. There should only be one ethernet wire connected to your Router/Gateway.
      1. Exception is if you have a camera system, then it can be two wires.
  5. Connect Port 2 on the switch to the Data Management port on the Vertex Box
  6. Connect all other devices (Computers and Phones) to the available ports from VLAN 1.
  7. Open Vertex Config tool. - Unit should auto detect on the network
  8. Verify that firmware version is current.
    1. If not, update it first
  9. On the Data Output tab
    1. Select Send at Both Start and End
    2. Select Send Outgoing Call Info.
    3. Select Send Detailed Data
    4. Optional - select Call Parking Flag
    5. Optional - select Do not report Ext to Ext calls
  10. Select Write Changes to Vertex
  11. On the Main Tab
    1. Verify the Unit IP Address
      1. Reserve it in the customer’s router
    2. Select the Get SIP Gateway MAC
      1. Follow the onscreen prompts
      2. Apply the SIP Gateway MAC
  12. Select Save All to Vertex
